The Atlas

In Pythagorean and Neoplatonic number theory, the One: the source the whole series of numbers comes out of, treated as its origin rather than as one number among the others.

The first pair. In the Neoplatonic scheme the monad cannot generate numbers at all until a dyad has appeared from it — a claim Eustratius of Nicaea used to argue that the Son and the Spirit must be perfectly matched to each other.

The Pythagorean figure of ten dots arranged in four rows — 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 — taken as the emblem of completeness. It is worth knowing because it cuts against a popular argument: in the tradition that produced it, the completion-numbers are four and ten, not three.

How many blanks a relation has. “Loves” has two — ___ loves ___ — and “gives” has three: ___ gives ___ to ___. Arity counts the places, never the things filling them, and that distinction decides a very old theological argument.

A relation that nothing can bear to itself. Nothing is taller than itself, and on Augustine's account nothing begets itself. Irreflexivity is the one property that forces a relation's places to be filled by different individuals — which is why it, and not the number of places, turns out to be load-bearing.

Peirce's three-place identity relation: a is identical with a is identical with a. It has three places that cannot be reduced to two, and exactly one individual fills all three — which makes it the standing counterexample to any argument that moves from “the structure has three places” to “there are three of them”.

The Eastern doctrine that the Father alone is unoriginate and is the single source of the other two, neither of whom originates anything. Drawn as a diagram it is a root with direct children and no chains — which fixes how deep the structure can go, and says nothing at all about how wide.

The discipline of saying what God is not, on the ground that no positive description reaches Him. In Eastern theology it is a rule rather than a mood, and it has a consequence people rarely notice: the rule that forbids over-describing God also forbids certain arguments about Him.

The leading realist account of what an argument-place is: a universal has three places exactly when it contains three slots. Its own axioms allow one object to occupy more than one slot at the same time — so the theory built to take places seriously says, as an axiom, that counting places does not count occupants.

A symmetry of a structure: a way of swapping its parts around that leaves every relation in it exactly as it was. A structure with a non-trivial automorphism contains positions that nothing inside the structure can tell apart.

The view in philosophy of mathematics that numbers simply are positions in a structure — there is nothing more to the number 2 than the place it occupies. It is the purest available version of “the slots are the individuals”, and it has been in trouble for twenty-five years over exactly that.

Leibniz's principle that if two things share absolutely every property, they are not two things but one. Max Black's thought experiment of a universe containing nothing but two exactly similar spheres looked like a refutation of it.

Quine's idea that two things can be told apart not by any property either has on its own, but by a relation neither can have to itself. Black's two spheres are two because each is two miles from another sphere and no sphere is two miles from itself.

Richard of St Victor's term for love shared by two people toward a third. His argument is that private self-love is not charity at all, that mutual love between two is real but unshared, and that love only becomes shared when two are joined in loving a third.

Aquinas's name for the ordering of a thing to itself under two different descriptions — which he classifies as not a real relation at all. It is, thirteen centuries early, exactly the case Peirce's teridentity makes formal.

The principle that in God everything is one except where relations stand opposed to one another. It is how Aquinas gets three persons out of four real relations, and it is the formula the Council of Florence used to license the filioque.

The Greek word Christian theology settled on for what English calls a divine “person” — one of the three who are the one God. It is contrasted with ousia, the single nature or essence all three share.

The single nature or essence the three divine persons share — what God is, as opposed to who. Nicene Christianity says the Son is homoousios with the Father: of one ousia, not a similar or lesser one.

In this corpus, a divine person is a hypostasis — one of the three who are the one God — not a human personality, a role, or a mask. English “person” is the usual translation and the usual source of confusion.

In Palamite Orthodoxy, God’s uncreated operations — what can be known and participated in — as distinct from the essence, which cannot. The distinction is how the East talks about real communion with God without collapsing creature into Creator.

The mutual indwelling of the three divine persons: each is in the others without mixing or collapsing. Social-Trinitarian models reach for it as their anti-tritheism clause; whether it actually does that work is contested.

In Christian theology, the Word — the Son — through whom all things were made. In Maximus, the one Logos is also the source of the many logoi, the inner principles of creatures. Not the everyday “logo”, and not automatically a proof of the Trinity.

Maximus’s name for the inner principles or “divine wills” of creatures, precontained in the one Logos. This corpus uses them as a candidate ontological ground of the good — and has not found in the checked primary texts a derived categorical ought.

The doctrine that God is not made of parts of any kind — not physical parts, and not a bundle of separable attributes either. It does real work in arguments about the Trinity: if there is no substrate for a mere aspect to sit in, then any real distinction in God has to be someone rather than something.

Peter Geach's proposal that “the same” always means “the same something” — so two things could be the same being without being the same person. It is often reached for as a way of stating the Trinity without contradiction.

The view that Father, Son and Spirit are three modes or presentations of a single person rather than three distinct persons. The early Church rejected it, and it matters here because collapse into modalism is the direction any purely structural argument for the Trinity falls in when it fails.

The clause “and from the Son”, added in the Latin West to the creed's statement that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. Its addition is one of the standing disagreements between the Orthodox East and the Catholic West, and several arguments in this Atlas were built to attack or defend it.

An argument that thinking and knowing can happen only if God is already the real condition that makes them possible, not an argument from evidence to God. Orthodoxy's stronger form is Maximian participation (one Logos contains the logoi of creatures). This argument alone does not make any specific theology true. Even at its strongest, if the bridges hold, it would press toward a real ground for logic and knowledge and license later stages: personal mind, Trinity, Christianity, Eastern Orthodoxy.

Building the strongest version of a position before criticising it. On Debby it is not a courtesy: a refutation of a weak version proves nothing, and the same cycle must then run a free-rider check so the steelman does not smuggle an unearned exclusion.

A formulation that includes or excludes a case without an independently argued standard. Debby’s rule: after steelmanning, ask in the same cycle whether the wording lets a favoured instance in, or a disfavoured one out, for free. The check runs on Eastern Orthodoxy’s own claims as hard as on a rival’s.

Whether a worldview can use one named argument for one named question without contradiction, borrowing, or a locally ad hoc exception. Passing this test means only that this argument does not discriminate against that worldview — not that the worldview is adequate as a whole.

Whether a named school survives better than rivals across a bounded, preregistered inventory of burdens, using the existing comparative dimensions and source gates. A local overlap or borrowed argument is not this test, and this test is not a second score.

A scope label, not a verdict: the worldview has not been run through the preregistered systemic inventory. It is neither globally adequate nor globally defeated.

Where a chain of justification stops: an axiom, a brute fact, a circle, or a regress. Debby treats the stop as a topology label, not an automatic win or crash. Calling a stop “virtuous” still owes a non-question-begging test — especially a parity-breaker against a rival circle of the same shape.

Debby’s three (plus one) provenance layers. QUOTE is verbatim only. SOURCE PARAPHRASE is compressed reportage of a source. INFERENCE is what follows from the quotes. JUDGMENT is the researcher’s call, never to be dressed as a quotation. Mixing them is how a Library page quietly overclaims.

Showing that denying a claim undercuts the act of denying it — you have to use logic to reject logic. TAG’s strongest form is retorsive. This corpus distinguishes that from merely listing ethics as a topic a worldview must ground: inventory is not yet retorsion.

Islam’s confession of God’s oneness. In this corpus it is never one view: Ashʿarī tawhid keeps real eternal attributes “neither He nor other than He”; Avicennian tawhid denies real distinct attributes altogether. Both are steelmanned as rivals to Trinity, not as a generic “unitarian god”.

The Islamic charge that Jews and Christians corrupted Scripture — by wording (lafẓ), by meaning (maʿnā), or both. This corpus has run the wording charge against the recovered New Testament under the same manuscript method used on the NT itself: wholesale textual replacement is rejected as history. Interpretive or meaning-corruption remains open. The charge does not make Islam historically impossible.

The classical Ashʿarī account of human action: God creates the act; the creature “acquires” it. Steelmanned here as concurrentism, not crude determinism. Compared with Māturīdī ikhtiyār and Orthodox synergy, the comparative tag on decree-plus-responsibility is symmetric cost.

The Orthodox claim that salvation is a cooperation of uncreated grace and created freedom — not God alone, not the creature alone. In this corpus it is the EO responsibility account, tested against Ashʿarī kasb and Māturīdī ikhtiyār, not a slogan that already wins the comparison.

Al-Māturīdī’s name for God’s eternal attribute of creating. Takwīn itself is eternal, while each thing created (mukawwan) begins in time — the school’s way of saying God was always able to create without the world being eternal.

Three Arabic words the Māturīdī sources use where a Christian expects “love”: maḥabba (love, in God without change of state), riḍā (approval or good-pleasure), walāya (protective nearness to the faithful). The cluster names approval, favour and protection toward creatures — not reciprocal, equal-to-equal communion.

The Māturīdī name for the creature’s own choosing — a particular, occurrent act of will (irāda juzʾiyya) by which the servant opts for one alternative. God creates the act chosen; the choosing itself is what makes the act obedience or sin, and so what reward and punishment track.

“The best” for the creature. Some Muʿtazilīs held God is obligated to do what is al-aṣlaḥ; the Māturīdī reply denies any such prior claim — God may create or withhold beneficence without injustice, so no universal aṣlaḥ obligation constrains what wisdom selects.

Gratuitous divine help — beneficence creatures have no prior right to. In the Māturīdī frame, withholding luṭf is not injustice, because injustice requires violating a claim; the concept separates “not generous here” from “wrong”.

The servant–Lord relation: the creature as ʿabd (servant, worshipper) before God as rabb (Lord, sustainer). In the Māturīdī sources this is the frame divine love actually lives in — reverent obedience upward, approval and protection downward — rather than a fellowship of equals.

“Bringing about” — in Ṣadr al-Sharīʿa, the servant’s performative part in a voluntary act: not a second created cause alongside God’s, but the relational performance (with intent and choice) under which God ordinarily creates this act rather than its rival.

How many things there are — here, how many divine persons. Kept separate from arity, which counts the blanks in a relation: “the Father loves the Son” has two places whoever fills them, while the why-three question asks why the filling stops at a headcount of exactly three.

The challenge, from Descartes's evil demon to the modern simulation hypothesis, that a mind-independent external world cannot be strictly proven from the inside of experience alone — a limit most respond to by disclosed, defeasible trust rather than refutation.

Peirce's claim, since given formal proofs, that three-place relations cannot be built out of one- and two-place ones, while relations with four or more places can always be built out of three-place ones. Three really is a stopping point — for the shapes of relations.

Jukka Keränen's 2001 result that structures usually contain positions nothing inside the structure can distinguish, and that every account of identity available to the structuralist then makes those positions the same thing — so the theory ends up saying that 1 = −1 in the integers under addition.

Peirce's distinction between three-place relations that genuinely mediate — sign, object, interpreter — and ones that only look three-placed. Specialists concede that no one has supplied a test for telling them apart, which is why the distinction cannot be used to disqualify teridentity.

The last great systematic Neoplatonist. His Elements of Theology argues that every effect stays in its cause, comes out from it, and turns back toward it — three stages, and the turning-back closes the circuit so no fourth stage is needed.

Byzantine bishop and commentator on Aristotle, a pupil of John Italos. Against the Latin picture of the Trinity as a line running Father to Son to Spirit, he set an isosceles triangle: the Father at the apex, the Son and the Spirit perfectly level at the two base corners.

Twelfth-century Byzantine bishop who wrote a point-by-point Refutation of Proclus's Elements of Theology. His objection to Eustratius — that the Son and the Spirit are not from the Father in the same way, one begotten and one proceeding — turns out, in modern terms, to be exactly the right repair.

Prior of the abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris and author of De Trinitate. He built the strongest argument anyone has for exactly three divine persons, and he built it out of the nature of love rather than out of counting anything.

Dominican friar and author of the Summa Theologiae. On the question of how many divine persons there are, he is the sharpest witness against slot-counting: he holds that there are four real relations in God and three persons, and explains the mismatch.

American logician, mathematician and founder of pragmatism, who worked out the algebra of relations and argued that three-place relations are irreducible. The same body of work supplies both the best formal support for a triadic argument and its cleanest counterexample.

British philosopher of religion, for many years at Oxford, and a founder of the modern analytic case for theism. Never an Eastern Orthodox source: his social Trinity is an Anglican/analytic necessity claim, not the Cappadocian account. His argument that perfect love requires exactly three divine persons is a descendant of Richard of St Victor's, and has been criticised in print for stopping at three without a reason.

Russian émigré theologian in Paris, and the most widely read modern Eastern Orthodox systematician. On the question here he is decisive and unembarrassed: the Trinity, he writes, “can be deduced from no principle nor explained by any sufficient reason, for there are neither principles nor causes anterior to the Trinity”.

The last of the Greek Fathers and author of the first full Eastern dogmatic summary. He supplies the sentence that closes off a whole line of argument: we have learned that generation and procession differ, and the nature of that difference we in no wise understand.

Patriarch of Constantinople and author of the Mystagogy of the Holy Spirit, the founding Eastern case against the filioque. It contains the most on-point patristic discussion of a fourth divine person anywhere — as the absurdity a reductio ends at, which means he treats “there is no fourth” as a premise nobody disputes rather than as something to establish.

North African bishop whose De Trinitate shaped every later Western account of the Trinity. On the question here he supplies a flat axiom and no argument for it: nothing whatever generates its own existence.

Cappadocian bishop whose orations supply this corpus’s strongest patristic anti-monad / anti-dyad rationale, and the formula “each God because consubstantial, one God because of the monarchy.” Lossky reads him as not trying to prove the Trinity to unaided reason.

Byzantine monk whose Ambiguum 7 and Quaestiones ad Thalassium are this corpus’s primary texts for logoi, synergy, and theosis. For TAG, his participation account is Orthodoxy’s strongest conditional explanation of mind-world fit, with an error-and-correction path through purification and natural contemplation. What the checked passages do not demonstrate is a finished belief-to-world proof, or a derived categorical ought.

Athonite monk and later archbishop of Thessaloniki who defended the real distinction of God’s essence and uncreated energies. Load-bearing for how Orthodoxy talks about knowing and participating in God; this corpus has not found in him a mechanism that grounds logical form.

Eastern Orthodox analytic theologian. His Monarchical Trinitarianism is the Cappadocian monarchy of the Father in modern form — an Orthodox source, not a rented Protestant tool. He answers Dale Tuggy’s “who is God?” charge by identifying the one God with the Father. Affiliation is not a uniqueness closer: his own definition takes exactly three persons as a stipulated input, not a derived conclusion — a gap confirmed live when the “why three” question was put to him on air.

Analytic philosopher and biblical unitarian; author of the Stanford Encyclopedia “Trinity” entry. In this corpus he is the named critic of Branson and of Swinburne’s social Trinity, and a cardinality control (one / two / four-plus) against exact-three necessity claims.

The systematizer of the Māturīdī school after its founder. His al-Tamhīd and Baḥr al-kalām give the school’s worked positions on created acts, divine wisdom, and why withholding beneficence is not injustice — the texts the victim-harm and selector tests actually read.

Greek Orthodox metropolitan and theologian of “being as communion”: personhood, not substance, is ultimate, and true personhood exists only in free, loving communion — the EO-native premise behind the claim that perfect love needs an eternally actual beloved.

The first council to gather bishops from across the Christian world, convened by the emperor Constantine. It produced the creed that states the Son is “of one essence” with the Father — the vocabulary every later argument about the Trinity has to work in.

The council that attempted to reunite the Latin and Greek churches. Its 1442 bull Cantate Domino states the formula that in God everything is one except where relations stand opposed — the principle Aquinas had used, now made conciliar.

The view that logical and mathematical facts are mind-independent, abstract objects or truths that exist whether or not any mind ever thinks about them — discovered, not invented.

The classical-theist view that logical laws are grounded in the necessary, eternal nature of a divine mind, rather than in a free divine choice or a mind-independent abstract realm.

The view that logical laws are human linguistic or social conventions — extremely useful and nearly universal, but not discovered mind-independent facts, closer to agreed-upon rules than to found truths.

The view that the realism debate over whether there is 'really' a mind-independent world is less important than what works, predicts, and lets us act — dissolving the question as unverifiable rather than answering it.

The view that everything that exists — including minds and consciousness — is ultimately physical, or wholly dependent on the physical, per the picture given by physics.

The view, classically Descartes's, that mind and matter are two genuinely distinct kinds of substance, related and interacting but not reducible to one another.

The view that reality is fundamentally mental — matter is a structure within, or appearance to, mind — rather than mind being one more thing built out of matter.

The majority view among professional philosophers that free will and determinism can both be true, because being 'free' means acting from one's own unforced reasons, not being uncaused.

The view that genuine free choice requires real, uncaused alternative possibilities open up to the moment of choosing, not merely acting on one's own unforced desires.

The view that every event, including every human choice, is the fully caused product of prior states, and that no one therefore has libertarian free will — the felt sense of choosing freely is real, but the freedom is not.

The view that neither determinism nor indeterminism supplies the kind of control real moral responsibility needs — an uncaused, random event isn't thereby authored by the agent either, so the libertarian's escape from determinism does not help.

The view that an act's rightness or wrongness is grounded in a necessarily-good God's nature or command, rather than in a standard independent of God.

The view that moral facts are real, objective, and mind-independent — the way mathematical facts are often taken to be — without requiring a divine ground.

The view, classically Aristotelian and central to much Thomist and Eastern Orthodox ethics, that things (humans included) have a proper function or end, and that wrongness consists in acting against that end rather than violating an arbitrary rule.

The view that morality's content is constructed from what rational agents would agree to under fair, idealized conditions, rather than read off a mind-independent moral fact or a divine command.

The family of views denying that there are mind-independent moral facts: moral language instead expresses attitudes (expressivism), systematically misfires (error theory), or is true only relative to a culture or individual (relativism).

The dominant classical Sunni theological school. On God it affirms real eternal attributes “neither He nor other than He”; on action, kasb. In this corpus it is the first Islamic rival steelmanned against Trinity — sharing a cardinality-underdetermination cost, not a strawman “unitarian god”.

The classical Sunni theological school founded in Samarqand by Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī. On God it affirms real eternal attributes and an eternal attribute of creating (takwīn); on action, God creates the act while the servant’s choice (ikhtiyār) makes it his. Steelmanned here as the strongest developed non-Trinitarian theism in the corpus, not a generic monotheism.

The late-antique development of Plato begun by Plotinus, on which everything flows out from a single ultimate source and returns to it. Its vocabulary — monad, procession, reversion — was absorbed by Christian theology and still shapes how the Trinity gets argued about.

Christian theology done with the tools and standards of analytic philosophy: explicit premises, formal argument, and the expectation that a doctrine can be stated precisely enough to be tested. The name comes from a 2009 collection of essays; the practice is older.

An ancient handbook of the religious meaning of the numbers one through ten, wrongly attributed to Iamblichus. It is the number theory Eustratius of Nicaea drew on — and it treats four and ten, not three, as the numbers where things are complete.
