Divine energies
In Palamite Orthodoxy, God’s uncreated operations — what can be known and participated in — as distinct from the essence, which cannot. The distinction is how the East talks about real communion with God without collapsing creature into Creator.
Greek energeia, “activity” or “operation”, not the physicist’s “energy”.
Energeia in this theology is not the physicist's energy. It is God's uncreated activity — what Palamas says can be known and participated in — as distinct from the essence, which cannot. The point of the distinction is communion: a creature can share in God's life without becoming what God is.
Debby uses the distinction in two places, and they must not be collapsed. OTC-013 tests it against the Thomist charge that a real distinction in God compromises simplicity (symmetric cost: Palamite antinomy vs created-grace deification). OTC-001 asked whether the energies or the Maximian logoi supply a mechanism that grounds logical or formal structure; the checked sources do not — a structural negative, not a missing page.
The mistaken everyday reading is "energy" as a force-field, a vibe, or a created power God switches on. Palamas's claim is that the energies are God, really God, and still not the essence. Whether that is coherent is the OTC-013 dispute, not a dictionary verdict.
