Sher defends a substantivist but non-theistic account of logic: logical laws are grounded in formal features of reality and in the demands of truth-directed inquiry, not in a mind, and not in convention either. Logic on this picture is answerable to the world without needing a legislator.

This matters to Debby precisely because it is not the easy target. She is not a conventionalist and not a psychologist about logic, so the standard transcendental objections to those positions do not touch her. She occupies the space the transcendental argument needs to be empty.
